A PhD student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology once shared a system he called Sage Mode for entering deep work on command.
I found it buried in a private Discord thread at 1 a.m. He posted it once. Three days later, the thread was gone.
This is exactly what he said.
Before every deep work session, he followed one rule:
Never sit down to work without a transition.
He believed focus had to be entered deliberately, not hoped for.
Most people open their laptop, bounce between fourteen tabs, and wonder why their brain feels scattered two hours later. He treated focus like a physical state you step into on purpose.
His first ritual was simple.
Twenty minutes before starting, he wrote one sentence:
“The only thing that matters in the next 90 minutes is…”
Not a to-do list. Not five priorities. One target.
Everything else became background noise by definition.
The second ritual was the one that changed how he worked. He called it burning the boats.
Phone in another room. Notifications off. Door shut.
He told people he would be unreachable for exactly ninety minutes, like he was walking into surgery.
The point was never willpower.
The point was making distraction structurally impossible instead of personally resistible.
Then came the final step.
After every ninety-minute session, he wrote one sentence:
“What did I actually produce?”
Not what he worked on.
What he produced.
He said most PhD students confuse motion with output. You can spend eight hours grinding and still create nothing worth measuring.
That one sentence forced honesty every time.
He was not the smartest person in his program.
But he never confused being busy with going deep.
Sage Mode worked because it removed every other option.
