The Fed’s October 2026 Beige Book says five of 12 districts saw AI-linked hiring changes at some firms. Firms cut staff through attrition, delayed hiring, or expect fewer new jobs.

The Fed released the report on October 14, 2026. It used information collected on or before October 5. It reports comments from business contacts, not the views of Fed officials.

Most districts saw roughly flat employment. The Fed says labor market conditions were little changed. Wage growth was moderate in five districts, modest in four, and slight in two.

Outsource Accelerator lists some examples. A Chicago business services contact cut jobs through attrition. Minneapolis IT staffing contacts said AI was dampening new job creation, not causing layoffs.

A Dallas accounting contact said some large firms may need fewer entry-level staff. In Atlanta, more contacts used AI tools, but most did not expect big cuts soon.

These are anecdotes from contacts. They are not a count of lost jobs. The Fed also notes that shortages persisted for specialized, technical, and skilled trade workers.

The takeaway

AI now appears in hiring plans at some firms. The Fed still describes the overall labor market as little changed.

Why it matters

  • For talent: entry-level and routine tasks may see slower hiring at some firms. Show work that needs judgment, such as review and client contact.
  • For employers: decide which tasks go to AI and which go to a person. Write the plan down before you post a role.
