Why you’re working 60-hour weeks and still missing your numbers
You’re setting the wrong type of goal. The science is clear, and it’s been clear for a decade.
“I want to make $10k/month”
This is an outcome goal. Research shows these have almost no measurable effect on performance. You can’t control whether a client signs – only whether you pitch.
“I want to land 5 clients this quarter”
This is a performance goal. Better, but still moderate. It tells you where to land – not how to get there.
“I’ll send 7 personalized pitches every weekday”
This is a process goal. The data says this is where the magic is – by a wide margin.
The data nobody told you about
Williamson et al. (2022) pooled 27 randomized studies on goal-setting. They measured effect size (Cohen’s d) – how strongly each goal type actually changes performance. Bigger is better.
The Process Method, in 3 moves
A 5-minute weekly routine that translates a vague income dream into the daily action that actually moves it.
Name the outcome you want
You’re allowed to want money, clients, freedom. Write it down – then put it on the shelf. It’s a compass, not a checklist.
Translate it into one process
Ask: “What’s the smallest daily behavior that, repeated, makes the outcome inevitable?” This is the move 99% of freelancers skip.
Score the process, not the result
End of week: did you hit your process goal? Yes/No. That’s it. Don’t grade yourself on what clients did – grade yourself on what you did.
Same dream. Two completely different operating systems.
One leaves you anxious every Sunday. The other compounds quietly into a thriving practice.
The Outcome Trap
- “I want $10k months”
- Mood = whatever the bank balance is
- Spends Sunday anxious about Monday
- Quits the niche after 3 quiet weeks
- Burns out chasing a number
- Has no idea what actually works
The Process Operator
- “I send 5 pitches every weekday”
- Mood = whether they hit the process
- Knows exactly what to do Monday
- Iterates the pitch, not the dream
- Sustainable. Every week looks the same
- Can spot which input actually drives revenue
What happens when VAs stop chasing outcomes
Real operators from the Orbytt network. Real numbers. (Names changed at request.)
“I dropped my income goal completely. Replaced it with ‘3 Loom pitches before noon.’ Hit $6,400 in month two. I literally never looked at the revenue dashboard.”
“I was setting OKRs like a startup. They paralyzed me. Switched to a daily process score and I’m shipping more this month than my whole last quarter.”
“The reframe was the whole thing. I can’t make a client sign, but I can write a great proposal. I now grade myself on proposals sent, not contracts won.”
